This tutorial will step you through on how to setup your Linksys WRT54G router. This tutorial assumes that our internet connection is running straight to your computer. You can deterine this by looking at our PoE (the small white half-moon device that powers our equipment). On the PoE there will be two ports: "Data In" and "P + Data Out". We are concerned with the cable coming from the "Data In" port. If this cable is plugged in to your computer you can continue with this tutorial.

Before starting to install your new router you will need:
* Your static IP address which we gave you at installation. If you do not know the IP address that was given you can do the following: click on the start button, then click on run. In the run box type in "CMD". Once this is open (a black box) type in "ipconfig". Now press enter. It will pop up some information. We are interested in what is states for the "Local Area Connection". We will need to write down the "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", and the "Default Gateway". Once you have these addresses written down on paper we can continue.

      1.    Now that you have the information needed we will need to change our IP settings on the computer to obtain them automatically. To do this click the "Start" button. Now click "Control Panel". Now click "Network Connections". Right-Click on "Local Area Connection" and choose properties. In the middle of the pop-up scroll down until you see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double-click this to open it. Once this is open we will need to choose obtain automatically on both IP Address and on the DNS.

  1. Plug the Ethernet cable from the "Data In" port on the PoE into the port labeled "Internet" on the back of the router.
  2. Plug another Ethernet cable into one of the available ports. The router should have came with a cable that will need to be plugged in one of the ports on the back of the router (port 1-4). It doesn't matter which port it plugs in to as long as you dont plug this cable to the one that is labeled internet.
  3. Plug the other end of that same cable into an Ethernet port on your PC

LinkSys Router Configuration

LinkSys routers now ship with a Setup Wizard which is intended to simplfy basic configuration tasks.

We do not recommend the LinkSys Setup Wizard for two reasons:

  1. The Setup Wizard is not significantly easier that the regular configuration menus
  2. If you use the Setup Wizard, you will end up learning two interfaces for your LikSys router instead of just one

Instead, we recommend simply starting your web browser and jumping into the configuration.

Once your web browser is open, go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password.

Web Prompt

The username is either blank or "admin" and the default password is "admin".

Once you are past the login screen, you are able to access (and change) a plethora of configuration options for your router.

Don't be worried by the enormous number and variety of options, your LinkSys router ships with default settings that enable it to work right out of the box in most environments. We will just have to fine tune a couple settings.

When we first login we are greeted by the following page:

We will need to click on the "Internet Connection Type" and we will need to change it from "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" to "Static IP". Just like Below.

Once you change the box to "Static IP" new fields will pop up where you will need to put in the IP address information. See below for an example:

ONCE THE IP ADDRESSES ARE IN YOU WILL NEED TO GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE AND CLICK "SAVE SETTINGS". AFTER IT SAVES YOU WILL BE BROUGHT TO A PAGE THAT HAS A "CONTINUE" BUTTON. CLICK ON THE "CONTINUE" BUTTON AND CONTINUE WITH THE TUTORIAL.

We will now set up the wireless side of the router. Click on "Wireless" Then "Basic Wireless Settings". You will have an SSID prompt where you can type your network name you want broadcasted wirelessly. After you put in the name be sure to press "Save Settings".

If you want to secure your network you can add a required security key that will be used to access your network. To do this click on "Wireless Security". Then from the drop down box choose "WEP". Leave all the default settings in place. The only one you want to change is the one shown in the picture below. You will need an easy to remember 10 digit code that will be used to access your wireless network.
